About Me

Rob Clayton, Psy.D.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist providing psychotherapy and personal-growth workshops for adults and teens. My private practice is located in San Luis Obispo, convenient to downtown and Cal Poly. I am licensed to practice Psychology in the state of California under license number 23626.

I came to Psychology after a career in law and politics and have since then worked clinically with adult and adolescent clients in counseling centers at Cal Poly, Catholic University, the Adele Lebowitz Center for Children and Families, the Meyer Treatment Center of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, and the George Washington University Center Clinic. During my eight years at Cal Poly Counseling Services, I provided individual and group therapy to students and delivered seminars on such issues as stress management, diversity, and procrastination, as well as providing training for early-career therapists.

My doctorate in clinical psychology was earned at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Additional training included a year in the advanced Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy Program of the Washington School for Psychiatry and a one-year fellowship at the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis.

In more recent years, I have completed a year-long training program in Jungian Psychology in Clinical Practice through the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles, as well as a three-year clinical training program in Dynamic Emotion-Focused Therapy (DEFT). I am a faculty member of the DEFT Institute [DEFTInstitute.com]. I have served for seven years on the board of the Central Coast Psychological Association, including two terms as board president, plus served four years on the San Luis Obispo city Human Relations Commission, including one term as chair.

Much of my work with clients focuses on depression, anxiety and relationship concerns. I focus on working, as rapidly as possible, with people who are highly motivated for change and growth. I find tremendous satisfaction in helping clients to work through their current difficulties to connect more authentically to themselves and others, and to find personal meaning and happiness.
